On Sunday, Oct. 4, 57th Street Books hosts a panel, "Where Popular and Literary Meet: A Discussion About Great Writing in the Mystery Genre," moderated by Chicago Literary Hall of Fame Executive Director Donald G. Evans. Genre fiction is widely read, even admired, but seldom considered the equal of its literary counterparts. The mere label "mystery" acts as a sort of downgrade. Panelists Michael Harvey, Lori Rader-Day and Libby Fischer Hellmann will explore the whos, whats, whys and hows of great mystery writing. The event, from 5 pm to 6 pm at 57th Street Books, 1301 E. 57th St., Chicago, is sponsored by the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame, Seminary Co-operatve Bookstore, Love is Murder Mystery Conference, and the Chicago Writers Association. RSVP at the 57th Street Books / Seminary Co-op's Facebook events page.
